Why match the grocery store when it costs you money
Most backyard sellers pick an egg price by looking at the store shelf or asking the neighbor down the road. Then feed prices climb, the flock eats the same either way, and the egg money quietly stops covering the egg costs.
Store eggs come from operations buying feed by the ton. Your dozen carries a share of your feed bag, your bedding, your cartons, and your time. Priced against the store, you are almost always selling at a loss and calling it a hobby.
How to use it
Enter your monthly feed cost, add other monthly costs (bedding, supplements, supplies), and optionally your carton and label cost per dozen. Then enter how many dozens you produce in a month and set the profit margin you want, or a target hourly rate for your time.
Use real numbers from your own setup. A backyard flock of six hens and a barn of forty will land in very different places, and that is the point.
